Are we still in Newbridge? When I look outside I see the familiar sight of George’s Street, although the menu in front of me leads me to believe either I’ve been transported elsewhere or somebody is taking a shot to see if our notoriously food-conservative town is ready for something different. Is Newbridge becoming a bit of a foodie haven? Recent openings seem to be suggesting as much. Just two years ago I wrote about Salamander Coffee House having easily the best coffee in the town but, there are now three or four places quietly fighting it out for the title – good times indeed!
I’ve been hearing good things about Ubh Cafe, the new eaterie in Salamander’s old spot (Joe has now moved Salamander to Newbridge Leisure Centre on Station Road) so, with Ali and I both enjoying a morning off together for once, we decided brunch was in order. It’s a drizzly, cold morning but Ubh is instantly warming. The large lighting centrepiece and up-cycled tables and chairs give the room a homely yet contemporary feel. The brunch menu is perfectly formed around their sourdough bread. Most of the choices are on toast and I remark to Ali that there’s nothing on the menu I wouldn’t order. I eventually settle on the Mushrooms on Toast (mushroom duxelle on toast, fried eggs and pickled enoki mushrooms) and a flat white.
Our coffees arrive first with a pint bottle of Dunlavin Farm non-homogenised milk. I love to see cafe’s supporting artisan producers and am also impressed to read that their coffee beans are house roasted. The coffee is rich and deep flavoured and, being my first of the day, goes down a little too easy. Our grub arrives not long after – it’s beautifully presented and the passion, pride and love for food is clear to see. My duxelle is well seasoned with a deep earthy flavour that is cut perfectly by the pickled enoki. The soft fried eggs add the required richness while the bread is crusty and well flavoured. I’m a very happy camper.
For the quality of the food on offer, the price is very reasonable while the service is friendly and knowledgeable.
